Abstract

The thesis deals with the a tenore singing, a male polyphonic genre belonging to the Sardinian oral traditions, and particularly with the vocal style used by the three singers of the a tenore choir (named bassu, contra and mesu boghe) that accompany the solo voice (named boghe). The singers generally use different nonsense syllables to make their accompaniment. These syllables, along with their particular pronunciation which involves special vocal devices and laryngeal tension, are considered one of the typical expressive traits of the traditional village styles.
The topic has been dealt with here by adopting a twofold perspective: on one hand, by analyzing a corpus of recordings using instrumental procedures which allow a close view of the characteristics of the tenore vocal styles and point out differences between speech and singing, within the conceptual and methodological framework of acoustic phonetics; on the other hand, by exploring the ideas and the practices of the singers through fieldwork and by means of a dialogic approach, within the research paradigm of ethnomusicology.
