Abstract

In his article, Dr Cirillo points out how pathogenic relationships, especially those between bacteria and protozoa, occur frequently in nature; indeed, the endosymbiotic association of ancestral bacteria with the eukaryotic cell has led to the evolution of intracellular organelles.
The interest of clinical microbiologists in symbiotic relationships between microorganisms has been aroused by the finding that symbiosis between an opportunistic bacterial pathogen, Legionella pneumophila, and freshwater and soil amoebae is at the basis of the Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks.
