Abstract

To the Editor — Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) are increasing in frequency globally and are difficult to treat. Although treatment successes have been reported, there are no definitive clinical studies available that show which classes or combinations of available drugs are most effective in yielding positive treatment outcomes.
In the 1 March 2009 issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases, Chan et al. reported that MDR-TB due to strains resistant to fluoroquinolones (FQNs) and streptomycin (STM) but susceptible to second-line injectables (n=12 ) has a significantly better prognosis than does XDR-TB (n=10).
