Abstract

A novel axially chiral phosphepine constructed on a diphenyl template is prepared in four steps. Resolution with the aid of menthyl chloroformate at the intermediate bisphenol stage affords the pure (R)-enantiomer, the cationic RI  complex of which is an active and stereoselective catalyst for the hydrogenation and transfer hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated acid derivatives with 94–96 % ee.
