established in 1949. Besides producing electric energy, its waters are used for drinking,
farming and industrial activities. From 1990 to 1997, a study was carried out to detect
the trophic state of the reservoir and its changes during this period due to an intensive
aquaculture activity in rearing cages, started in 1989. The first four year data, already
published, are here compared to those of the following four years. Mean annual
concentrations varied over very large ranges, total phosphorus from 20.5 mg P m-3 in
1996 to 43.5 mg P m-3 in 1994; nitrate from 161 mg N m-3 in 1994 to 307 mg N m-3 in
1996; chlorophyll a from 3 mg m-3 in 1996 to 10 mg m-3 in 1994; biomass from 2 mg l-1
in 1996 to 5 mg l-1 in 1995 and density from 21 x 106 cells l-1 in 1995 to 53 x 106 cells
l-1 in 1994. In the latest four years, an increase in Cyanophyceae was observed, with
different dominant species during the period. Considering the particular hydrologic
conditions of Sardinian basins undergoing large annual variations, and the overall, year
by year strongly varying limnological situation, the data suggest a possible trend of the
reservoir towards more trophic status.
