Between January and July 1985 a massive algal bloom occurred in Mulargia reservoir that supplies water for drinking purpose. Serious problems happened in the water treatment plant. A limnological research, particularly on the phytoplankton structure and biomass, chlorophyll a and nutrient contents, started immediately in February and it is outstanding still. The sampling is made every week near to the dam. Many phytoplanktonic species, belongs to four different class, were identified. Numerically, Bluegreen algae were found to be the main class with high density and biomass, due to Oscillatoria rubescens D.C.; it is present from February to July and, in this period, it is totally dominant. It is the reason of the problems in water treatment plant. The other class are insignificant in biomass terms. The mean annual contents of biomass and chlorophyll a are 6,6 cm3m-3 and 13 mg m-3 respectively; they are very high therefore is possible an eutrophic level of the lake. The nutrient content, on the contrary, is quite low (30 mg P-tot. m-3, 220 mg N-inor. m-3, 550 mg N-tot. M-3).
