Abstract

Quaternary strata crop out extensively in northwest Sardinia and have been studied to define which has been the palaeogeography and palaeoclimate evolution of this area during late Pleistocene. This area has also been chosen because considered relatively stable for the last 125 ka. Facies analysis has allowed grouping the sedimentary succession in two unconformity bounded units (U1 and U2). The first unit is composed of beach and coastal dune deposits of Tyrrhenian (Eemian) age (OIS 5e). The beaches developed during relative sea-level rise under a warm and sub-arid climate; the dunes during the relative highstand in a warm but moistly climate. The unconformity between U1 and U2 marks Wu¨rmian regression (OIS4). During this glacial, cold moist phase relatively deep incised valley formed. These valleys were mostly filled by braided-streams that upward were substituted by alternate of coastal dunes and colluvial deposits. These alternate are interpreted to form during the relative lowstand under a cold and arid climate during which repetitive period of moist conditions occurred.
