Alternative URLs: AbstractIn the past few years some species of the genus Alexandrium have caused harmful
blooms in the Gulf of Olbia. In order to better understand patterns of cyst accumulation
in the area, the granulometry of sediment has been mapped and dinoflagellate cyst
abundance has been assessed in areas characterized by different granulometry. 37
dredgings were collected in 2005, and, on the base of sediment composition and the first
cysts screening, a second sampling was performed at 6 selected stations in 2006. The
highest cyst density and species diversity were detected in the innermost part of the
Gulf and a significant correlation (r = 0.875; n = 6) was detected between the cyst
densities and fine sediment (clay + silt).
