AbstractCREAMS (capacitance type approach) and LEACHW (Richard's equation approach) codes has been validated and
calibrated in three Italian environments (Piedmont, Tuscany and Sardinia) , using 4 types of soil ranging from sandy-loam to
clay-loam. A set of large drainage lysimeters has been used to obtain percolation data. In all sites one lysimeter was cropped with
lucerne, while the others were cropped with widespread crops in the area (maize for silage in Piedmont, double cropping (Italian
ryegrass-maize for grain) in Sardinia and permanent pasture in Tuscany and Sardinia). Measured percolation ranged from 100
and 300 mm y-1. Lysimeters cropped with lucerne were used for calibration and the others for validation. The parameters used for calibrating the models have been the field capacity for the CREAMS model and the values of a and b of the Campbell
moisture-pressure relation for LEACHW. CREAMS model showed good performance only in calibration (RMSE < 50 mm),
but not in validation, LEACHW showed better performance in calibration as well as in validation (RMSE < 30 mm). Using
parameters estimated from other data more easy available (particle distribution size, bulk density and organic matter content)
acceptable simulation has been obtained only in Tuscany.
