Abstract

Our scientific interest is devoted to electrosynthesis and characterization of thiophenebased conducting polymers (CP). We are involved in the synthesis of materials where the backbone is made up of terthiophene and N-chelating moieties (terpyridine or 1,10- phenanthroline). Herein we report the synthesis of three new molecules, where the two fragments are linked by an acetylene tether: 4’-(2,2’:5’,2”-terthien-3’-ethynyl)- 2,2’:6’,2”-terpyridine (TAT), 5-(2,2':5',2''-terthien-3'-ethynyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (TAF5) and 4-(2,2':5',2''-tertien-3'-ethynyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (TAF4). These molecules were electropolymerized by potentiostatic and potentiodynamic techniques, and the corresponding polymers were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry, IR and SEM. In this way we were able to study redox behaviour, HOMO-LUMO levels and band gaps, nature of charge carriers and doping levels, morphology and NGM (nucleation and growth mechanisms).
Then, the complexes of TAT and TAF4 with Ru(II) were polymerized to give the corresponding metallopolymers, electrochemically characterized, too.
Finally, poly(TAT) and poly(TAF4) were tested as active materials in bilayer organic photovoltaic cells, as a preliminary approach in order to verify the possible photovoltaic response of such materials and their employment in technologic devices.
