Abstract

1. 1. The hemoglobin (Hb) polymorphism of the Italian catfish (Ictalurus sp.) was investigated by means of isoelectric focusing of Hb and of electrophoresis of globin chains.
2. 2. Multiple chains, due to allelism and non-allelism at the level of both α- and β-globin loci, were observed in the AA and BB Hb phenotypes.
3. 3. Isolated Hb tetramers consisted of the usual doublets of α- and β-globin chains or of stable combinations of different α- and different β-chains (asymmetric tetramers). This evidence explains the notable Hb multiplicity of this species.
4. 4. Hypotheses are advanced on the possible number, and chromosomal organization, of globin genes of the A and B Hb haplotypes.
