Abstract

In the article “Cp/CV Ratios measured by the sound velocity method using calculator-based laboratory technology” (J. Chem. Educ. 2007, 84(3), p. 462–464), the last line of the second paragraph reads:
For a linear, tri-atomic molecule, such as carbon dioxide, there are six degrees of freedom (three translational and three rotational) and, therefore, γ = 1 + (2/6) = 1.33.
Instead, it should read:
For a linear, tri-atomic molecule, such as carbon dioxide, there are five degrees of freedom (three translational and two rotational) and, therefore, γ = 1 + (2/5) = 1.40.
