An in vitro test to evaluate the fungitoxic activity of Thymus capitatus essential oil was carried out by observing the growth of Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium italicum on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates inoculated with 10 μl of a spore suspension. The in vivo efficacy of these compounds was investigated on peel discs of 'Valencia late' orange fruit inoculated with the same quantity of spore suspension. Thymus essential oil inhibits the growth of both B. cinerea and P. italicum. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 12 ppm for Botrytis and 25 ppm for Penicillium, while the fungicide concentration was 25 and 50 ppm respectively. SEM observations also indicated that the mycelia of both fungi were severely injured by the application of T. capitatus essential oil.
