Periodontal disease is the result of a local bacterial infection produced by a pathogenic microflora within the periodontal pocket. Studies evaluating the effect of periodontal therapy on diabetic patients over 50 are scarce. Therefore, we investigated the effect of mechanical periodontal therapy on the diabetic control in older adults. Our results demonstrate that mechanical periodontal treatment improve periodontal status of type 2 diabetic patients, although the differences at baseline and at 2- year examination are not statistically significant. We focused on patients over 50 because the old age is associated with an increased prevalence of periodontal disease and with an increased insulin resistance as well as with an increased incidence and severity of diabetes.
