The present work is proposed to inquire the controversial issue of evil within the Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata.
Through the analysis of the structural, thematic and stylistic aspects of the poem and a comparative study of the poet’s early texts, our research is mostly concentrated on the contents and on the dynamics of moral evil which concerns the sphere of action and the behaviours of Tasso’s characters.
Particular attention is addressed to the fascinating nature of evil and to the attractiveness that arouses through beauty. Starting from the philosophical influences, Aristotelian and Platonic, we are also going to linger on the crucial issue of knowledge.
Finally, the last part is dedicated to the treatment of both natural and physical evil which, responsible of human pain and sorrow, introduces to the thorny issue of God benevolence.
